Students with Children

If you're a student with a child or children, one of your main concerns might be how to care for your child(ren) while abroad. Going on an education abroad program is possible with a family, and can be just as rewarding. There will be some considerations to keep in mind, but careful planning and working with our office can help you create an experience that will meet all of your goals!

I'm not sure how long I should go...

With both long and short term programs, we'll help you find the perfect length of time.

Long-Term Programs

Spending a semester or year abroad is definitely an option, and you may be able to go on a program that allows you to bring your children or family along! You'll be able to experience all the new places and things that any other student would experience, and you may not have to leave your little one too far behind.

It will take careful planning to make this a possibility. While you can certainly do a long term program, you'll need to consider child care, schooling options, housing, language, and finances. Start to plan early, meaning come see us in Bradley Hall! We'll work with you to help you find a program that supports your needs.

Short-Term Programs

Shorter programs, like the ones during winter break, spring break, and even over the summer, make it easier to secure care for your family locally while you're abroad. You'll still get to go on an international program, but the time could be a week, two weeks, maybe even up to a month.

The downside to a short term program is that you may be limited on what courses you can take, and you won't have as much time abroad. It all depends on your goals and needs, so talk to us if you think a shorter program would be best for you and your family.

Things to Consider

  • Housing

Can you find a program or host university that has family housing? What are off-campus housing options?

  • Childcare

Will you have a spouse or partner with you that can care for your child while you're in class? If not, what childcare options are available at your university or in the host city?

  • Education

Do you have family members in school? What options will they have to continue their educations while you're abroad?

  • Extra Costs

Think about any extra costs, such as health insurance, visas, passports, immunizations, and flight tickets for the entire family.

It's Your Choice

Ultimately, it's your choice when and how long you go abroad. Our office is here to help you make those decisions. Reseach your potential host countries, programs, and decide what you want to get from your experience abroad! We'll be here to help you take the next step!
