Faculty-Directed

Programs taught by UK faculty

You'll register for the faculty member's course, just like you would if you were staying here on campus. Yep...it's that easy. Once you complete the course abroad,  you'll get a course grade, UK credit, and it will affect your UK GPA.

Partner, Exchange, Direct & External

Receive transfer credit

An international transcript, or one sent from your program provider, will be sent to us with all your courses and grades listed.

UK EA will facilitate the transfer of credits to your UK transcript. You will receive UK course equivalent credit for courses equated on your Academic Approval Form. If you failed to complete an Academic Approval Form prior to departure, you'll only receive general elective credit at the 100 level (GEE1--).

  • Transcript processing takes 1-3 months.
  • All EA credit must be posted to your UK transcript before you can graduate. Students who plan to study abroad and graduate from UK during the same term should consult their EA Advisor and Academic Advisor about their graduation timeline.
  • An official copy of your transcript must be sent directly to UK EA. UK EA cannot accept any transcript from you.
  • Credit reflection on your UK transcript can take up to a month.
  • Complete the Academic Approval Form for UK equivalencies.
  • Grades are pass/fail and do not affect your overall UK GPA. Grades may impact your college GPA, or requirements related to prerequisite and major requirements.

Independent Study & Internships

Consult with an EA Advisor

Independent Study

In order to get credit for independent study, you’ll need to work closely with the department from which you’re trying to get credit. They can help you find out which departmental course you need to enroll in and make all the necessary arrangements like finding a faculty mentor and making a learning agreement.

Internships

You can either find an internship through one of our program providers or on your own. Working through a provider can be easier since they help with placement, applications, visas and transfer credit. Organizing your own global internship is certainly doable, you’ll just need to talk to your department, academic advisor and EA advisor about it. Depending on the internship, you might need to get credit by one of the three ways below.

Option 1: Transfer Credit

  • Process: If your internship is through a program provider, they will send us an international transcript listing all courses and grades.
  • Timeframe: It may take 1-3 months for us to receive this transcript. Patience is key.
  • Approval: We review the transcript and inform the Registrar's Office of your eligible courses for credit transfer, based on your prior Academic Approval Form submission.
  • Grading: These grades are pass/fail and do not impact your overall UK GPA. Grades may impact your college GPA, or requirements related to prerequisite and major requirements.
  • Reminder: Ensure your Academic Approval Form is completed for proper credit transfer.

Option 2: Department Credit

  • Registration: Enroll in a specific course at UK, mirroring a traditional on-campus experience.
  • Completion: Fulfill all course requirements, potentially including projects or reports that reflect your internship experience.
  • Grading: Receive a letter grade upon completion, which will influence your GPA.
  • Integration: This option is ideal if your internship aligns closely with your major or academic interests.

Option 3: Experiential Credit (EXP)

  • Eligibility: Best suited for service-oriented or specific skill-based internships.
  • Initial Steps: Consult with your UKEA Advisor to determine if EXP enrollment is necessary.
  • Registration: Engage with the Stuckert Career Center to enroll in EXP.
  • Faculty Sponsor: Find a faculty member to sponsor and oversee your internship experience.
  • Learning Contract: Develop a contract outlining your learning objectives, responsibilities, and the credit amount.
  • Documentation: Some programs may provide a transcript, negating the need for EXP enrollment at UK. Confirm with your advisor.

Additional Considerations:

  • Proactive Planning: Start discussions early with your department, academic advisor, and EA advisor to align your internship with academic requirements.
  • Documentation: Keep thorough records and reflections of your internship experience, as they may be necessary for credit evaluation.
  • Cultural Adaptation: Be prepared for cultural and professional differences in the workplace abroad, which can be a valuable learning aspect of your internship.

Remember, each internship experience is unique, and choosing the right credit option depends on your specific situation and academic goals. For personalized guidance and to explore more about these options, please reach out to us.

Teach abroad with UK

You'll register for a course at UK just as if you were staying here. Not sure what course? Reach out to the faculty member you've been working with to get your teaching abroad experience up and running. They should be able to help you out. Once you're registered, go teach abroad, complete your course requirements, and get that grade! Since it is a UK course, your letter grade will affect your GPA.
