UK Credit for Education Abroad Courses

Complete the Academic Approval Form (AAF) to figure out what UK credits you'll receive for any courses you pass while abroad. The AAF process can take awhile since it relies on faculty and staff in a variety of academic departments.

The AAF is only used for these program types:

  • Partner
  • Exchange
  • Direct

Get the Form

Download the AAF to start the course review process so you'll know what the courses abroad will count as here at UK.

Complete the AAF

1. Download the Academic Approval Form.

Download the AAF using the download button at the top of the page, or found here.

2. Complete the Top Section

Complete the top section of the AAF using your personal and program information. This is used to tie the courses on the form to the correct student and program.

3. Review Your UK Degree Audit

Meet with your Academic Advisor to determine what degree requirements you should try to complete while abroad. Identify courses that align with your major, minor, or UK Core requirements. Make a note of the course name and course description - or be able to find it easily for the next step.

4. Find Courses Offered Your Program

Visit your program’s website to review course offerings during your program term. Pay attention to the term, year, and any pre-reqs.

5. Compare UK and Program Courses

Take some time to compare the requirements you need at UK to the courses offered on your program. Review the course descriptions and syllabi, if available. You can find UK course descriptions in myUK where you schedule and look up courses. Your program courses will be linked directly from your UK EA program page.

6. Start the Middle Section

List out the name and course number, if available, for each course you're interested in on your program. You can add as many as you want and you can complete multiple AAFs, if needed.

This does not register you for courses or lock you in to taking these courses.

7. Get Your Courses Equated

Take a moment to think about which college and department would issue credit for the UK EA course if it were taught at UK. You need to contact the designated approving official for that college and department to have your UK EA course equated to UK credit. For example, taking "The History of Europe from 1800 to today" is likely going to be reviewed by the History department at UK.

You can find the approving official using the Major Advising Pages.

  1. Consider which college and department at UK might teach the course you're taking abroad if it were offered at UK.
  2. Select the college that most aligns with course (Explore Programs by College).
  3. Select the major/department that most aligns with the course (Explore Programs by Major).

When you reach out to the approving official, be sure to share your AAF, a course description/syllabus for the EA course, and some context about your request.

8. Final Signatures

After getting your courses equated, meet with your Academic Advisor to review the courses and discuss their potential impact on your degree plan. When you're both satisfied with your plan for courses abroad, both you and your Academic Advisor need to sign the bottom.

9. Submit Your AAF

Submit your AAF to UK EA via email at educationabroad@uky.edu. Our staff will upload your AAF and use it to process your international transcript once it arrives after your program.
